4 Unique Ways to Explore a New City

22 July 2015 miscellaneous 1 comment

New cities are riddled with unique excitements. From their food, architecture, culture, people, sights, sounds, to everything beyond and between, the only question is how best to see it all?  There are so many novel ways to explore a new city and get under its skin, and here are five of our favorite to help you get stared:

Pick a theme for your day

It can be easy to lose yourself in the city sights, but you might really enjoy focusing your day on a particular type of venue or attraction. Is there something that first fascinated you about that city which you would like to explore deeper? Perhaps a personal interest you wish to indulge?

Your theme can take the form of café-hopping, a tour of art galleries, only water-based transportation, or focus on anything from animals to architecture. The options are endless. Simply pick something you love, and seek to uncover the city from that niche perspective.

Cycle the city

This is usually a favorite way to experience a city in places like Europe, but it is actually great all over the world. Enabling you to see both parks and city streets with ease, cycling is perfect for showing you the city in a real multi-dimensional, fresh light.

Faster than walking, but still slow enough to take in the sights, this really is the best way to get around a new area. Just be sure to stock up on spare bike parts before you begin your adventure and remember that distances can be covered quite quickly on bicycle, so be ambitious and get out there!

Join a meet-up group

In every big city there are typically established meet-ups, hobby clubs, and enthusiast groups. These are easily found online, and almost all always welcome curious newcomers. Not only does this expose you to a unique and probably overlooked facet of the city, it is also wonderful and extremely fun.

One excellent way to see things from a local perspective is to join a running meet-up for the morning. Not only will the group know the best routes and take you to places you would have otherwise missed, but you might even make a few local friends as you work off your excesses.

Go on a photographic treasure hunt

Before you set out, either make your own list, or have a look online for lists of popular items to photograph in that city, and then set out to capture them. Make it challenging, creative and fun and ensure you wander far and wide in your quest so that you see all the varying city areas.

This doesn’t necessarily have to be just places as you can set yourself bizarre challenges too, or even construct the list around different styles of shots. Your hunt could chase a close-up of nature, the perfect latte, THAT bridge at sunset, a set of emotions, or a local from every district.

However you chose to explore your new urban playground, just keep your experiences fun, creative and curious and you are guaranteed to discover something great about the city.

ms like batteries, plastic bottles, plastic bags and unwanted or broken electrical goods will all end-up in landfill and will put a strain on the waste infrastructure in getting there. With the exception of donating clothes to charities, it is best to dispose of waste back home.

There are many ways to travel green but by simply booking conscientiously, exploring alternative transports, filtering water and taking rubbish home, you can make an enormous difference to the destination you visit.
