Iran – Discovering the Traces of Old Persia in the Islamic Republic. Episode 13 – Reading Kama Sutra in Teheran

Reading Kama Sutra in Teheran

The last couple of days spent in Iran were spent in Teheran and they were pretty full … on one hand I wanted to buy some more carpets (and I found them next to the bazaar for a few Euros) but also to visit what was left for visiting…On top of that, we had a huge surprise in a bookstore that had books in English. read more…

Iran – Discovering the Traces of Old Persia in the Islamic Republic. Episode 12 – Yazd, on the Silk Road

The tall minarts of Yazd mosque in Iran

I left Shiraz early in the morning. One day before we bought the tickets to Shiraz (this time no Iranian showed up to buy them for us like in Teheran) so early, in the morning we were present at the bus terminal in Shiraz…Today was a big day …the election campaign began and Ahmadinejad himself came to the poets town to launch his election campaign. He went to Persepolis also in order to get validation from the great Shahs and now he returned to the city. Thanks God, he was an early bird, otherwise who knows how long we could stay in the bus on the road – the road from Shiraz to Yazd passes by Persepolis. read more…

Iran – Discovering the Traces of Old Persia in the Islamic Republic. Episode 11 – Shiraz of the poets and of gardens.

Things to see in Shiraz: The mausoleum of Hafez

In the Muslim religion, one of the 5 major pillars of faith is called Salah – or the pray …in it, the Islamic faithful one confesses that he doesn’t have any other God but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet. Well, in a very Islamic country, like the Islamic Republic of Iran there are more gods and I don’t mean the 12 Shiites Imams … I mean the poets Hafez, Rumi, Sa’di or Omar Khayyam… Don’t you believe that they are alive, they lived and created more than 800 years ago, but since then, they are worshiped like true saints and in any house in Iran their books have to be next to the Koran – at least that of Hafez. Any Iranian is capable of reciting entire poems out of their works. read more…

Iran – Discovering the Traces of Old Persia in the Islamic Republic. Episode 10 – Persepolis

Persepolis, capital of Persia

There are a few ancient cities in the world which where destroyed and then revived… Maybe the most famous is Pompei, but I would also add to the list Angkor Wat, Petra or Macchu Picchu as well. For me, all of these places are magical, both because of their beauty and their greatness but also because you discover the level of civilization reached by the human race from hundreds or thousands years ago… One of these magical places is Persepolis, in Iran. read more…

Iran – Discovering the Traces of Old Persia in the Islamic Republic. Shiraz – Episode 9

Things to see in Shiraz: the leaning tower

I could keep on writing for ages about Isfahan, but I believe many of you would like for me to move further on. And that I will do… I cannot however avoid adding that through Isfahan it is worth going to the little mosque with the minarets that shake, to wander for some time through the Bazaar, inclusive to a shisha (hookah) with the locals or to discover small and coquet palaces, many originating from the Qajar period. But let’s jump towards the next destination, Shiraz. read more…
