Making Sure You Are Prepared
If you have a big trip coming up, it’s best to make sure you are fully prepared to take on the environment around you, while making sure you are prepared for anything.
Here is our top list for RTW (Round the World) travel to make sure you have all areas covered.
Comfortable Shoes
This is such a must!!! Chances are you don’t have a ton of luggage if you planning a RTW trip, so only bring what you need. We recommend sneakers for everyday wear, some form of waterproof shoe or boot, and maybe even a hiking sandal if you are going to where it’s warm and mountainous. You can get a great deal at Merrell and find everything else you need, too.
Credentials
This includes everything. If you lose your ID, chances are you are not getting home anytime soon. This includes your passport and your driver’s license. Even if you aren’t going out of the country right away, it is wise to have a second form of ID on you.
Cash
Bring cash in the currency of your home country and also get some in the country(ies) you plan on visiting. If you have American currency, that is usually accepted around the world, so you should bring extra (but not too much) just to be safe.
Emergency Credit Card
Bring a credit card with enough room on it to book a flight home in case of an emergency, or if you get injured and need to go to the ER. Make sure you call ahead for international travel and get fraud protection just to be safe.
Backpack for easy on-the-go travel
Leave the fancy luggage and wheelie suitcase at home. For this RTW travel, you need something that you can throw on your back and literally just go. You can find a reliable one from Merrell and they even have coupons to save you some money for your trip.
Current Medications
This may sound silly, but depending on where you are going, you may not be able to get a refill as fast as you’d like. Bring enough to make it through your journey, and bring extra in case you lose a bag or need it for something. If you can, have your doctor even write you an extra prescription you can take with you if you medication is life depending.
Security
This goes for both yourself and your belongings. A combination lock that can at least keep your backpack closed or metal lock of some sort is a huge help and possible detour to those who may be seeking something that doesn’t belong to them. Also, if you have pepper spray or some other legal form of protection, you should bring it along (just make sure you check it before you board the plane.)
Small First Aid Kit
You can buy ones that offer only the necessities so they are small enough to fit in your backpack. This will be perfect for little injuries you incur along the way, especially if you end up somewhere where clean water is not easily accessible.
Very helpful article especially to first-time travelers. Planning ahead of time before your big trip is indeed vital to avoid any troubles and hassles that you may encounter if fail to do so.
I almost always travel with extra footwear, preferably a hiking sandal. I find hiking sandals really reliable and don’t want to risk not having extra footwear around in case I need it.
Great checklist! I always forget something or the other, and will keep this handy!
