Visit Athens together with a local. “This is my Athens” program
You can have the most sophisticated and informed guidebook, you can download the latest scream in I-something applications, you can have the latest GPS, but nothing compares with discovering a city together with a local, especially a knowledgeable one. He or she will make you discover some unknown, hidden places full of charm and devoid of tourists… And some experiences can be memorable. So, this is the latest idea of the Greek Tourism Authority – visit Athens with a Greek who will show you the nicest parts of Athens (and most of them are well hidden), to talk about local culture or, why not, about the Grexit !
How it works. The walk lasts at least 2 hours. If you misbehave, it can last shorter, if there is chemistry between him/her and you, it might last longer. What you need to do – apply on line at least 72 hours here and you will be assigned one of the volunteers to this program. Set up a meeting with him or her and go out to “conquer” Athens. You can find more information about the program here.
And in case you enjoy it, just drop me a line J. Καλή διασκέδαση!
I *LOVE* this! Connecting with a local is the best way to make a trip memorable and it’s wonderful to make it “official” and easier. I hope this program really takes off and spreads to other areas!
I love it, that’s why I decided to promote it a bit because it is really worth… Actually, if I will be in Athens in the next few months (it might happen), I will definitely go. I heard about something similar somewhere else in Western Europe, but not sure where and if it still happens. However, there are plenty of free walking tours with locals in cities like Bucharest, Budapest, Munich, Berlin, Prague and other, but there might be dozens of tourists showing up and the interaction with the local is not the same. And by the way, thank you for retweet
You’re welcome for the tweet. I’m also going to feature it in my “weekly roundup” post on the 20th.
shoot! sorry, it’s the 22nd, not the 20th.
