Usually, the flights from Europe to West Coast are relatively expensive. You might find Europe – New York at 400 euro, maybe less, but not so often for San Francisco or Los Angeles. Well, Air France has some very good prices these days from Dublin to San Francisco – just 407 euro (326 £) for a return flight.
Ufff… I just returned to Bucharest. It was a too short night flight to be able to sleep too long – it takes less than 4 hours to fly from Lisbon to Bucharest… not enough to sleep, although, Thanks God I had plenty of conditions – all 2 seats next to me where empty, so I had almost a flat bed. Such a luxury was not available in the business class. However, in the last 2-post TBU conference days, I went to visit 2 gems close to Porto – Guimaraes and Braga. Today, I will write about Guimaraes, the European Capital of Culture in 2012 and I promise to come back with a story on Braga, as well (which I loved it more :). But, let’s go and show you some places in this special town.
In 1992, I was stepping out of the train, full of luggage, on the platform of the train station in Lucerne. I left Austria around 5 o’clock in the morning and until there I changed 3 trains and I still had one more train connection to the village of Entlebuch, where I was supposed to stay. More than that, I had to arrive until 4 o’clock in the afternoon. But, despite the tiredness, the baggage and the pressure of arriving on time at a certain hour, I HAD to go out of the train station to enjoy the panoramic view of Lucerne. I’ve been in Porto and the region for the last few days… and I really enjoy… the mix between old and new, between ruined and restored, between water and hills is just amazing. The whole bohemian atmosphere around the two banks of the mighty Douro river would definitely touch you ! I promise to come back with more stories about this wonderful city, but until, then, I just want to show you some sights of Porto… just a sample !
A friend of mine accused me jokingly that I trash the noble ideals of backpacking by writing about paradise like places, but also very expensive ones…He was having my post about the Anantara Hotel in the Maldives in mind. Don’t be afraid, I didn’t betray the cause…And I still continue to appreciate the hotels, hostels and guesthouses where you feel fine whether they are 5 stars or none.
