Adventure Holidays in Canada

4 July 2013 Canada 3 comments

If you like adventure holidays in the great outdoors, then a holiday in Canada is a must. The country’s mountainous landscape makes it the perfect location for winter sports, so if you’re eager for adventure, book your trip several months in advance and make sure you get the cheapest deals. Then as soon as winter comes, all you need to do is pack your skis and head to the Great White North for the adventure holiday of a lifetime.

Canada is renowned as one of the world’s best skiing locations and has been home to the Winter Olympics twice. Whistler Blackcomb is known as one of the best ski resorts in North America and during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, the alpine skiing, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping events took place here among many others.

Whistler and Blackcomb are both top ski mountains and popular with tourists in summer and winter alike. The town of Whistler has a great Alpine atmosphere and after an active day on the slopes, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a spot of après-ski. You could even have a night out on the town here!

Yet while skiing makes for a great holiday, it’s important to consider the risks and make sure you’re covered for winter sports on your travel insurance policy. When you’re getting a travel insurance quote, ask whether winter sports cover is included as it may not automatically be part of the insurance package. It may cost you extra but it could also save you thousands of pounds in medical bills if something happens.

If you’ve been skiing before and fancy something different or you’re simply after a new challenge, why not give snowboarding a go? Many people say it’s harder to learn than skiing but easier to master, so once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be a pro-snowboarder in no time.

Grouse Mountain is Vancouver’s winter playground and thousands of budding skiers and snowboarders head there every year to tackle the slopes. Just a stone’s throw from Vancouver, it’s easy to combine a city break here with a few days snowboarding.

Just remember that if you are trying snowboarding for the first time – or even if you’re an experienced snowboarder – it’s important to be careful. Snowboarding can be a dangerous sport but with the proper equipment and instruction, you can minimise the risk of injury. And with a comprehensive travel insurance policy you can save yourself a hefty medical bill if anything does happen.

If you love adventure and are eager to do something different, try your hand at snowmobiling. A snowmobile is a vehicle designed to be driven on snow and ice and while they’re essential for people living in snowy, isolated territories, you can also spend a really fun day riding round on one.

Ontario is a great place to go snowmobiling as it offers a large network of uncongested recreational trails. Most tourists who haven’t ridden a snowmobile before usually take part in a snowmobiling trek; you’re usually accompanied by a guide who knows the area well and this is ideal if you also want to do some sightseeing. Fully-guided tours are perfect for beginners but if you’re a true adventure seeker, why not take on a more challenging multiple day tour? GoRide Ontario is one of the largest organisers of snowmobiling and with their experienced guides, you’ll know you’re in safe hands the whole way.

However, accidents can happen even with the most experienced guides and it’s important to prepare for every eventuality. DNA travel insurance provides cover for many winter sports– simply contact your insurer to check which activities are covered before you go.

I guess summer. I’ve been in May, it was still OK, but still a bit cold for my taste. In summer, I hope, there will be significantly more sunshine
